Back and chest acne can flare in Florida heat. Learn what causes it, what may help at home, and when to see a Jacksonville dermatologist.
Facial acne gets most of the attention, but breakouts on the back, chest, and shoulders are just as common. In Jacksonville, where heat and humidity stretch across most of the year, body acne can be especially stubborn. It can also be easy to miss until it starts leaving dark spots or scars.

What Causes Back and Chest Acne?
Body acne forms the same way facial acne does. Oil and dead skin cells clog hair follicles, and acne-causing bacteria inside the clogged pore can trigger inflammation. The back and chest have a high concentration of oil glands, which helps explain why breakouts there can be widespread and deep. Several factors can raise the odds:
- Hormones. Androgens increase oil production, which is why body acne often appears in the teen years and can continue into adulthood.
- Genetics. A family history of acne, including body acne, increases the risk.
- Friction and pressure. Backpacks, sports pads, seatbelts, and tight straps can irritate follicles. Dermatologists call this acne mechanica.
- Products. Heavy body lotions, oily sunscreens, and hair conditioner rinsed down the back can clog pores.
How Florida Heat and Humidity Add Fuel
Jacksonville’s climate creates conditions that favor body breakouts. Sweat mixes with oil and dead skin, and humid air slows how quickly skin dries. When damp shirts, sports bras, or uniforms sit against the skin for hours, that mixture gets trapped against the follicles.
Daily life here adds to it: yard work, outdoor jobs, long practices, and weekends at the beach. Thick, water-resistant sunscreens protect but can feel heavy on the back and chest. Many patients notice their body acne is worst from late spring through early fall.
Daily Habits That May Help
For mild body acne, these steps are a reasonable place to start:
- Shower soon after sweating, and change out of damp workout clothes, uniforms, or swimsuits quickly.
- Try a benzoyl peroxide wash. Lather it on your back and chest, then leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing. It can bleach towels and fabrics, so use white linens.
- Consider a salicylic acid body wash to help keep pores clear.
- Wear loose, breathable fabrics and wash workout gear, sports pads, and pillowcases often.
- Rinse conditioner first, then wash your body, so hair products don’t sit on your back.
- Choose non-comedogenic sunscreens and lotions. Lightweight formulas can protect without adding to clogs.
- Don’t pick or squeeze. Body breakouts can be deep, and picking raises the risk of dark marks and scars.
Give any new routine 6 to 8 weeks before deciding whether it’s working.
When to See a Dermatologist
Consider a visit if breakouts are deep or painful, cover a large area, leave dark marks or scars, or haven’t improved after 2 to 3 months of consistent care. An itchy rash that keeps returning is also worth checking.
At our office, experienced medical providers provide care under the medical direction of Dr. Brandon T. Beal, a double board-certified, fellowship-trained dermatologist. After an exam, your provider builds a plan based on what’s actually causing your breakouts. Depending on your skin, that plan may include:
- Prescription topicals, including formulas designed to cover larger areas like the back
- Oral antibiotics for a limited time to calm inflamed acne
- Hormonal therapy for some patients, such as spironolactone
- Isotretinoin for severe, scarring, or treatment-resistant acne, with close monitoring
- Antifungal treatments if fungal folliculitis is the cause
Treatment plans are individualized, and results vary. Learn more about our acne treatment approach, or read how teen and adult acne often differ.
Dark Marks and Scars on the Back and Chest
Body acne can leave flat red or brown marks long after a breakout clears, and Florida sun can make those marks darker and slower to fade. Daily sun protection on exposed areas like the chest helps. For some patients, discoloration may also improve with topicals or M22 IPL.
Textured or raised scars are a separate concern, and the right option depends on the scar type and location. Controlling active acne comes first. Ask your provider which approach fits your skin, and learn more on our acne scar treatment page.
