Understanding Acne Scars
Acne scars form when deeper breakouts, the nodules and cysts, damage the skin’s collagen as they heal. Most acne scars are depressed (atrophic), and they come in recognizable types: icepick scars, narrow and deep like a puncture; boxcar scars, wider depressions with defined edges; and rolling scars, soft waves that show most in side lighting. Some people instead form raised scars where breakouts healed thick. Most people with scarring have a mix, which is why single-tool plans underdeliver.
One important distinction: the flat red or brown marks left after a pimple heals usually aren’t scars at all. That’s post-inflammatory discoloration, it often fades on its own, and it responds to different treatment; see our hyperpigmentation page. True scars change the skin’s texture, and texture is what the treatments below rebuild.

If you still have active breakouts, controlling them comes first, both because active acne keeps making new scars and because clear skin responds better to resurfacing. The anchor of our acne scar program. ResurFx is a non-ablative fractional laser: it treats thousands of microscopic columns within the scarred skin, triggering the skin to rebuild collagen and smooth the texture from underneath, without removing the surface. It’s especially suited to rolling and boxcar scarring across larger areas like the cheeks.
TCA CROSS for icepick scars
Deep, narrow icepick scars respond poorly to broad resurfacing, so they get their own technique: TCA CROSS applies a high-concentration acid precisely inside each individual scar, triggering focused collagen production that pushes the scar floor upward over repeated sessions. Chemical peels
Medium-depth chemical peels improve shallower scarring and overall texture and tone, and help blend treated areas with the surrounding skin. Often layered between or alongside laser sessions.
Injections for raised acne scars
Thick, raised acne scars, most common on the jawline, chest, and back, can be flattened and softened with steroid or 5-FU injections over a series of visits. Details on both are on our scar treatment page.
One honest note on scope: our Jacksonville office does not perform surgical or ablative procedures, which includes subcision and CO2 laser resurfacing. Can acne scars be completely removed?
No, and you should be suspicious of anyone who says otherwise. What honest treatment delivers is meaningful improvement: smoother texture, softer shadows, scars that stop being the first thing you notice. Most patients find that’s exactly what they wanted; “perfect” was never the realistic goal. Results vary by individual.
How many ResurFx sessions will I need?
Acne scarring is typically treated over a series of sessions, spaced weeks apart, with collagen continuing to rebuild for months after each one. Do I need my acne under control before scar treatment?
Yes. Treating scars while new breakouts keep forming new ones is rowing against the current. The good news: we treat both, as one coordinated plan, so getting your acne controlled is step one of scar treatment rather than a separate errand.
Are my dark marks scars?
Probably not. Flat red or brown marks left after breakouts are post-inflammatory discoloration, not true scars; they often fade over months and respond to pigment-focused treatment rather than resurfacing. True acne scars change the skin’s texture. Your provider will sort out which you have, since the treatments differ.
Does insurance cover acne scar treatment?
Acne scar treatment is generally considered cosmetic and paid directly, while medical treatment of active acne is often billable to insurance depending on your plan. We’re upfront about which is which, and current information is on our pricing page.
