What Is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved neuromodulator used to treat dynamic wrinkles such as:

Dynamic wrinkles form from repeated facial muscle movement — like raising your eyebrows, squinting, or smiling. Over time, these lines can become more visible even at rest.

Botox works by temporarily relaxing the targeted muscles responsible for these expressions.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox temporarily reduces muscle activity in specific areas. When the muscle relaxes:

  • Wrinkles soften
  • Lines appear smoother
  • New lines are less likely to deepen

Results develop gradually, with most patients noticing improvement within 3–7 days and full results around 10–14 days. Treatment effects typically last about 3–4 months, though individual results vary. Some patients may notice benefits lasting longer, while others metabolize it more quickly. Maintenance treatments are usually recommended 3–4 times per year.

What Are the Benefits of Botox?

Botox can:

  • Soften forehead lines
  • Improve frown lines (11s)
  • Reduce crow’s feet
  • Create a more rested appearance
  • Prevent dynamic wrinkles from deepening over time

Treatment is:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Performed in-office
  • Typically completed in 10–20 minutes
  • Associated with little to no downtime

Our goal is simple: You should still look like yourself — just more refreshed.

Botox Results

Many patients see noticeable softening of wrinkles within one week.
The degree of improvement depends on:

  • The strength of your facial muscles
  • The depth of existing wrinkles
  • Your metabolism
  • Consistency of treatment

Some patients require adjustment or follow-up treatments to achieve optimal results. Results vary. A consultation is required to determine candidacy.

Botox Can Treat

Beyond traditional wrinkle areas, Botox has several advanced cosmetic and functional applications.

  • Lip Flip
    • A small amount of Botox can relax the upper lip muscle, allowing the lip to gently roll outward for a fuller appearance without filler.
  • Vertical Lip Lines (“Smoker’s Lines”)
    • Botox may soften fine lines around the mouth when appropriate.
  • DAO (Downturned Smile)
    • Relaxing the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscles can help improve a downward-turned mouth.
  • Gummy Smile
    • Botox can relax overactive upper lip muscles, reducing gum visibility when smiling.
  • Golf Ball Chin
    • Relaxing the mentalis muscle can smooth a dimpled chin appearance.
  • Brow Lift
    • Strategic placement can create a subtle, non-surgical brow lift.
  • Facial Contouring / Jawline Slimming
    • Botox can relax enlarged masseter muscles to:
      • Slim the lower face
      • Improve jawline contour
      • Reduce clenching and teeth grinding
  • TMJ, Teeth Grinding & Jaw Pain
    • Botox may help relieve symptoms associated with overactive masseter muscles, including jaw tension and grinding.
  • Nefertiti Lift (Jawline & Neck)
    • Botox can relax downward-pulling neck muscles, creating a smoother jawline appearance.
  • Nasal Botox (Nose & Nostrils)
    • Small doses can address nasal tip drooping when smiling or nostril flaring in appropriate candidates.
  • Trap Tox (Trapezius Slimming)
    • Botox in the trapezius muscles may soften shoulder bulk and improve neck contour in select patients.

Botox for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Underarm Sweating)

Botox is also FDA-approved to treat hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes excessive underarm sweating beyond what is needed to regulate body temperature. If sweating soaks through clothing, occurs even when you’re not overheated, or affects your confidence at work or social events, Botox may help reduce sweat production.

Botox works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands. When injected into the underarm area, it can significantly decrease sweating for several months.

  • Treatment is performed in the office
  • Typically takes about 20–30 minutes
  • Minimal downtime
  • Results often last 4–6 months, sometimes longer

Is Botox Safe?

Botox has been used for decades in both medical and cosmetic treatments. When performed by experienced medical providers, complications are uncommon. However, as with any injection procedure, risks may include:

  • Bruising at the injection site
  • Temporary eyelid drooping (ptosis)
  • Headache
  • Mild swelling

We discuss risks, benefits, and alternatives during your consultation.

Botox vs. Dysport

Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved neuromodulators that treat:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet

Both work similarly by temporarily reducing muscle activity. Some patients may respond differently to each product. At Jacksonville Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, we offer both options and will recommend the most appropriate product for you.
