What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore lost volume, smooth lines and folds, and refine facial contours. As we age, the face gradually loses fat, bone support, and collagen. Skin that once rested on a full foundation begins to fold and hollow: smile lines deepen, cheeks flatten, and the under-eye area can start to look tired. Filler replaces some of that lost support directly.
The technique is sometimes called soft tissue augmentation. Placed well, filler can add fullness to the lips, restore cheek projection, soften smile lines and marionette lines, and improve balance across the face, with results visible right away.
Filler is also a medical procedure. The face is dense with blood vessels and nerves, and a good outcome depends on the injector’s knowledge of what sits beneath the skin. That is why we treat filler as a medical decision made in a dermatology office, not an add-on from a menu.
What Can Fillers Address?
Filler is a versatile tool. Depending on your anatomy and goals, treatment can address:
- Cheeks: restore volume and contour where the midface has flattened, which can also soften the folds below.
- Lips: add fullness, refine shape and border, and lift downturned corners of the mouth.
- Smile lines (nasolabial folds): soften the folds that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth.
- Marionette lines: soften the lines that run from the mouth corners toward the chin.
- Under-eye hollows (tear troughs): restore fullness beneath the eyes that can make you look tired even when you are not.
- Jawline and chin: sharpen definition and improve profile balance without surgery. For fullness under the chin, Kybella is a different tool, removing fat rather than adding volume.
- Full facial balancing: smaller amounts of filler placed across several areas in one coordinated plan, rather than overfilling a single spot.
Not every area fits every face. Your provider will tell you which of these makes sense for you, including when the honest answer is none of them.
What Filler Results Look Like
Good filler is invisible as filler. Our goal is that you look like yourself, with volume restored where time took it, not puffy, overfilled, or different. That means conservative amounts, placement matched to your anatomy, and a willingness to stage treatment over more than one visit rather than overcorrect in one.
Results are visible immediately, though mild swelling can exaggerate them for the first few days; the settled result shows over one to two weeks. How long it lasts depends on the product used, the area treated, and your metabolism. Results vary.
Types of Dermal Fillers
Different fillers have different consistencies and lifespans, and the right choice depends on the area being treated. We recommend the product that fits your anatomy and goals, not a one-size default.
Hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm and Restylane)
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most widely used fillers today. HA is a substance found naturally in your skin. Softer HA formulations suit the lips; firmer ones provide more lift for the cheeks and jawline. HA fillers are not permanent, typically lasting from 6 to 24 months depending on the product, the location, and the individual. They can also be dissolved with an enzyme if needed, which adds a margin of safety and adjustability. Common HA products include Juvederm and Restylane.
Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite)
Calcium hydroxylapatite is a compound found naturally in bone. Radiesse provides firmer correction for deeper creases and can enhance fullness in the cheeks and other facial contours. It typically lasts from six to twelve months.
Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid)
Sculptra is an FDA-approved filler that works differently: rather than adding volume directly, it stimulates your own collagen production for a gradual, natural lift. It takes several weeks to see the full effect, and results can last up to two years.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
All injectable procedures carry some risk, and honest guidance means saying so. When filler is performed by experienced medical providers with detailed knowledge of facial anatomy, complications are uncommon. Possible risks include:
- Mild bleeding, bruising, and swelling
- Under- or over-correction
- Small nodules or lumps
- Infection
- Vascular occlusion, a rare but serious complication in which filler blocks a blood vessel. This is the main reason injector training and anatomy knowledge matter more than price.

Consultation
Your provider evaluates your facial structure, listens to what bothers you, and builds a plan around it: which areas, which product, how much, and in what order. You will hear what filler can realistically do, and what it cannot.

Treatment day
Injections are performed in the office. Topical numbing may be used for comfort, and discomfort is brief for most patients. Most people return to their normal day right after, with simple aftercare instructions to limit swelling and bruising.

Results and follow-up
You see a change right away, and the settled result over one to two weeks. If anything needs fine-tuning, a follow-up visit addresses it. Maintenance timing depends on the product and the area, typically months to a year or more apart.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Fillers?
Healthy adults with realistic expectations who want to restore volume or soften lines and folds without surgery are typically good candidates. Filler may not be the right tool if your main concern is skin texture, etched-in lines at rest, or crepey skin; in those cases the ResurFx fractional laser or a neuromodulator like Botox may fit better, alone or in combination with filler.
Filler treatment is typically deferred during pregnancy and breastfeeding. A consultation is required to determine candidacy, treatment plans are individualized, and results vary.

How long do dermal fillers last?
It depends on the product and the area. Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last 6 to 24 months, Radiesse about six to twelve months, and Sculptra results can last up to two years. Areas with more movement, like the lips, tend to break filler down faster. Results vary by individual.
Will I look overfilled or fake?
Not if it is done conservatively. The overfilled look comes from too much product, placed to chase a trend instead of fitting a face. We use conservative amounts matched to your anatomy, and we would rather stage treatment over two visits than overcorrect in one.
Can filler be reversed?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which makes them adjustable and adds a margin of safety. Radiesse and Sculptra cannot be dissolved, which is one of the reasons product selection is a medical decision made at your consultation.
Filler or Botox?
They solve different problems. Botox relaxes the muscles that crease the skin, so it treats lines created by movement, like forehead lines and crow’s feet. Filler restores volume, so it treats folds, hollows, and flattening. Many patients benefit from one, the other, or a combination, and your consultation sorts out which.
