What Is M22 IPL?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a broad-spectrum light treatment. Unlike a laser, which uses a single wavelength, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths of light in each pulse. Those wavelengths are absorbed by pigment in brown spots and by the blood vessels behind facial redness, which allows one treatment platform to address several common concerns at once.
The M22 is a medical-grade IPL platform with adjustable settings, so treatment can be tailored to your skin and the specific concern being treated. It is one of several light and laser options at our Jacksonville office, alongside the ResurFx fractional laser and photodynamic (blue light) therapy.
How M22 IPL Works
During treatment, pulses of light pass through the surface of the skin and are absorbed by their targets: melanin in brown and sun spots, and hemoglobin in the small vessels that cause visible redness. The light energy gently heats those targets, and over the following days and weeks your body clears the treated pigment and vessels naturally.
Most patients see gradual improvement over a series of sessions, commonly three to five, spaced several weeks apart. Your provider will recommend a plan based on your skin and goals. Results vary from person to person.
What M22 IPL Can Treat
Brown spots and sun damage
- Sun spots and age spots
- Freckles and uneven skin tone
- Sun-related discoloration on the face, neck, chest, and hands
Redness and visible vessels
- Facial redness and flushing
- Broken capillaries and small visible vessels (telangiectasias)
- Rosacea-related redness, when appropriate for your skin
Jacksonville’s year-round sun makes brown spots and sun damage some of the most common concerns we see. IPL can help address the visible signs, and consistent sun protection helps preserve your results. For persistent redness, IPL is one of several options we may discuss; you can learn more on our rosacea page. For discoloration concerns beyond sun spots, see hyperpigmentation treatment.
Your IPL Visit
1
Before
We review your skin, health history, and goals, and confirm IPL is an appropriate option for you. You will get simple prep instructions, including avoiding tanning and direct sun before treatment.
2
During
Light pulses are delivered to the treatment area. Most patients describe a quick snapping or warm sensation. A typical facial session takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
3
After
Mild redness or warmth is common and often settles within hours. Treated brown spots may darken before they flake away over the following days. Most patients return to normal activities right away, with diligent sun protection.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
IPL often works well for patients with lighter to medium skin tones who want to address sun spots, uneven tone, facial redness, or visible vessels. Because the light targets pigment, IPL is not appropriate for every skin tone or every type of discoloration, and it should not be performed on tanned skin.
That last point matters in Florida. If you have recent sun exposure or a tan, your provider may recommend waiting, adjusting settings, or choosing a different treatment. Alternatives can include photodynamic therapy, chemical peels, or topical treatment plans, depending on your skin.
Results vary. A consultation is required to determine candidacy, and treatment plans are individualized.

IPL vs. Laser Treatments
IPL and lasers are related but different tools. IPL uses broad-spectrum light and is often the first choice for color concerns: brown spots, sun damage, redness, and visible vessels. A fractional laser like ResurFx uses a single wavelength to work on texture: fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.
Many patients benefit from one or the other, and some treatment plans combine them over time. Your provider will explain which option fits your skin and goals, in plain language, before you commit to anything. You can compare all of our light-based options on the laser treatments page.

M22 IPL FAQs.
Does IPL hurt?
Most patients describe a quick snapping or rubber-band sensation with each pulse, along with warmth. Sessions are short, and most patients tolerate treatment well without numbing.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what is being treated and how your skin responds. Many treatment plans involve three to five sessions spaced several weeks apart. Your provider will recommend a plan at your consultation, and results vary by individual.
Is there downtime after IPL?
Downtime is minimal for most patients. Mild redness or warmth often settles within hours, and treated brown spots may darken and flake over several days. Strict sun protection before and after treatment is important, especially in Jacksonville’s year-round sun.
Is IPL right for my skin tone?
IPL targets pigment, so it often works best on lighter to medium skin tones and is not appropriate for every skin tone or every type of discoloration. A consultation is required to determine candidacy. If IPL is not a fit, we can discuss alternatives such as photodynamic therapy, chemical peels, or a topical plan.
How much does M22 IPL cost in Jacksonville?
Cost depends on the area treated and the number of sessions in your plan. IPL is a cosmetic treatment and is typically not covered by insurance. We review pricing at your consultation, and you can find current information on our pricing page.
