Jax Dermatology has really impressed me with outstanding care by Michelle Madjar, APRN, who correctly diagnosed and cured a calf rash that had perplexed two other dermatologists for over a year. Mowing grass wearing shorts had triggered an allergic reaction. Could be the chemicals sprayed on my lawn. Evolved into a staph infection. No match for Michelle. I’m fine now. Also, making the office visits pleasant were front desk staff Samantha and Morgan, and Michelle’s assistant Vriksha. Friendly and efficient.
Response from the owner:Thank you, we are thrilled to learn that you had a positive experience with us!

😓 Can Stress Really Affect Your Skin?

Yes — and the science backs it up.

When you’re under stress, your body produces more cortisol, the primary stress hormone. While cortisol plays an important role in regulating your body’s “fight or flight” response, chronic stress keeps these hormones elevated, which can lead to:

  • Inflammation
  • Increased oil (sebum) production
  • Impaired skin barrier function
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Immune system changes

Common Skin Conditions Triggered or Worsened by Stress

🧴 Acne Breakouts

Stress stimulates oil glands, leading to clogged pores and increased breakouts — especially around the jawline, chin, and cheeks. This is known as stress acne and can affect both teens and adults.

Pro Tip: Stress acne is usually inflammatory, meaning red, painful bumps that don’t respond well to typical OTC products.

💢 Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema is a chronic condition linked to a compromised skin barrier. Stress can trigger flare-ups or worsen existing symptoms by increasing inflammation and scratching.

Tip: At JDC, we often recommend barrier-repair moisturizers and prescription topicals to quickly calm flares.

🌡️ Psoriasis

Stress doesn’t cause psoriasis, but it can trigger new plaques or worsen existing ones, especially during major life transitions or illness.

Tip: Consider integrative management strategies, including topical treatments, lifestyle changes, and biologic therapies.

🌺 Rosacea

Emotional stress is a major trigger of rosacea, often causing facial flushing, redness, and visible blood vessels.

Fact: Stress + heat + alcohol = the perfect storm for flare-ups. Awareness and proactive care are key.

😠 Frown Lines, Forehead Wrinkles, and Jaw Tension

Stress often leads to repetitive muscle tension, including brow furrowing, squinting, and jaw clenching. Over time, this contributes to dynamic wrinkles like:

🌙 Under-Eye Circles and Dull Skin

Chronic stress and poor sleep habits go hand-in-hand, leading to fatigue-related changes like:

  • Puffiness
  • Dark circles
  • Dehydrated or uneven skin tone

💡 How to Manage Stress-Related Skin Issues

Managing stress isn’t just good for your mental health — it’s a powerful tool for achieving clearer, healthier skin. Here’s a dermatologist-approved guide to addressing both the root causes and visible effects:

🧘 1. Adopt a Stress-Reducing Routine

  • Practice mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing
  • Stay active — even light walking reduces cortisol
  • Prioritize sleep and hydration
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol intake (both worsen inflammation)

🧴 2. Upgrade Your Skincare Regimen

When stress strikes, your skin needs extra support:

  • Use gentle, hydrating cleansers
  • Add barrier-repair moisturizers with ceramides
  • Incorporate niacinamide or azelaic acid for redness or acne
  • Avoid harsh exfoliants during flare-ups

💉 3. Consider Cosmetic Solutions for Visible Effects

Stress may leave lasting signs like wrinkles, dullness, or under-eye bags. JDC offers advanced, minimally invasive treatments to restore your glow:

👩‍⚕️ 4. See a Dermatologist for Persistent Issues

If you’re dealing with:

  • Chronic or cystic acne
  • Unrelenting eczema or psoriasis
  • Redness or irritation that won’t go away
  • Sudden skin changes

…it’s time to consult a dermatologist. We can differentiate between stress-induced issues and other medical concerns, and create a personalized treatment plan that gets to the root of the problem.
