High UV Exposure: The Sunshine Double-Edged Sword

While the sunshine is great for your mood, it also means intense UV radiation exposure, even during winter months or cloudy days.

How It Affects Your Skin:

  • Accelerates photoaging (fine lines, wrinkles, leathery skin)
  • Increases risk of sunburn and hyperpigmentation
  • Heightens your lifetime risk of skin cancer, predominantly basal and squamous cell carcinoma

Pro Tips from Our Jacksonville Dermatologists:

  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily, even on overcast days
  • Use antioxidant serums (like Vitamin C) to fight sun-induced free radical damage
  • Schedule annual skin cancer screenings, especially if you’re fair-skinned or outdoors often

Humidity: A Blessing or a Curse?

Jacksonville’s subtropical climate means high humidity, especially in the summer. That moisture can help retain skin hydration—but for many, it also creates the perfect storm for breakouts, clogged pores, and excess oil.

How It Affects Your Skin:

  • Increases sweat and sebum production, leading to acne
  • Makes it harder for the skin to “breathe”
  • Can aggravate rosacea or eczema flare-ups

Solutions for Humid Conditions:

  • Switch to lightweight, oil-free moisturizers and cleansers
  • Double-cleanse at night if wearing makeup or sunscreen
  • Book monthly deep-cleansing facials

Salt Air & Wind from the Coastline

Living near the beach has perks, but coastal winds and salt in the air can disrupt your skin barrier.

What Happens to Your Skin:

  • Salt can dry out the skin and strip natural oils
  • Windburn and irritation can make sensitive skin feel raw and tight
  • Chapped lips and rough patches are common after beach outings

Protective Measures:

  • Use a hydrating barrier cream before heading outdoors
  • Apply lip balms with SPF
  • Replenish lost moisture with ceramide-rich or hyaluronic acid serums
sunscreen

Winter “Cold Snaps” & Indoor Heat

Jacksonville’s winters are short and mild, but sudden temperature drops and the use of indoor heaters can cause unexpected dryness.

Seasonal Skin Shifts:

  • Loss of hydration leads to flaking, itching, and dullness
  • Skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema often worsen
  • Lips, hands, and cheeks are most affected by dry indoor air

Our Dermatologist’s Winter Advice:

  • Switch to cream-based moisturizers
  • Use a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week
  • Try humidifiers indoors to add moisture back into the air

Allergy Seasons = Skin Flare-Ups

Spring and fall can be brutal for allergy sufferers in Jacksonville. But did you know your skin also reacts to pollen and airborne irritants?

What You Might Notice:

  • Itchy, red, or inflamed skin
  • Puffy eyes and eczema flare-ups
  • Increased sensitivity to skincare products

Solutions That Help:

  • Use fragrance-free and hypoallergenic skincare
  • Rinse your face after outdoor exposure to remove allergens
  • Visit us for a barrier-boosting facial or anti-inflammatory skincare plan
