What are Seborrheic Keratoses?
Seborrheic keratoses can be challenging to distinguish from melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer. However, they are benign skin growths. When they first appear, there may be one, but multiple growths typically appear. They are most commonly found on the chest, back, neck, and head.
They usually start as small, rough areas, but over time, they develop a thick, wart-like surface. They are sometimes described as having a “stuck-on” appearance, may look waxy, and have a somewhat raised texture. They are generally round or oval-shaped; while most develop into brown, some can be white, yellow, or black.
While the exact cause of seborrheic keratosis is unknown, these growths tend to run in some families. Risk factors include being over 50 and having a family history of the condition.
