What is Seborrheic Keratosis and How Is It Treated?

Seborrheic keratosis is a very common noncancerous skin growth. While it is harmless and doesn’t need treatment, you may decide to have it removed.

As many as 90% of adults over 60 have one or more of them. While they are harmless and don’t need treatment, you may have them removed if they become irritated by your clothing or don’t like how they look.

My exam was thorough and professional. Zach completed 3 procedures with no discomfort at all, making sure sites were totally numb before he proceeded. I recommend Jax Dermatology and Cosmetic Sugery.

This was my first visit to Jax Dermatology and I was impressed by the professionalism at the front desk, the knowledge and expertise of the staff and the kindness extended to me during treatment. I arrived very early to my appointment to give me time to fill out paperwork and was more than willing to come back for the actual appointment, however, staff got me in early and there was no "wait" involved I want to thank the staff for such prompt and courteous service.

My second visit on July 2, 2025, was equally satisfying. I was taken into the exam room within 5 minutes of arriving. The services of Dr. Stepien were accomplished with ease and perfect professionalism. I appreciate a practice that values their patients and does their absolute best to provide the services with such knowledge and expert handling. I will continue with Jax Dermatology for all future needs.

I visited again in April 2026 and had a great experience. The PA who did my filler was extremely informative and did great work on my face. I appreciate the professionalism shown by the folks at Jacksonville Dermatology.

What Is Sborrheic keratoses?

Seborrheic keratoses are common, non-cancerous skin growths that tend to occur as people age. They can be brown or black and have a warty appearance. They are typically found on the chest, scalp, shoulders, back, abdomen, and face.

What Causes Seborrheic Keratoses?

It is not entirely clear what causes seborrheic keratoses. However, normal skin aging and too much sun exposure do play a role. Seborrheic keratoses also tend to run in families, so genes may be a cause. They are not contagious, so you cannot get them from others or spread them to someone else.

Treatment Options for Seborrheic Keratosis?

In almost all cases, seborrheic keratosis doesn’t need treatment. However, many people opt to have them removed because they find them irritating or dislike the way they look. An exam by a dermatologist is frequently all that is needed.

The treatment options for seborrheic keratosis include:

  • Minor surgery to remove the growth (curettement)
  • Shave biopsy
  • Chemical peel

Before any procedure, you will have a consultation with our expert cosmetic dermatologists. The physician will listen to you, perform a thorough evaluation, and provide an individualized treatment plan to address your needs and concerns.
