Seborrheic keratosis is a very common noncancerous skin growth. While it is harmless and doesn’t need treatment, you may decide to have it removed.
As many as 90% of adults over 60 have one or more of them. While they are harmless and don’t need treatment, you may have them removed if they become irritated by your clothing or don’t like how they look.

I had my first visit with Jax Dermatology recently. Because it was my first visit, it took a long time to fill out the medical questionnaire and personal information. It might have saved some time if the form was sent to me via email prior to the visit. Other than that, everything went smoothly, the check-in staff was welcoming, courteous, and helpful, including the doctor's assistant. Dr. Stepien was knowledgeable and friendly.Thank you Jacksonville Dermatology, I will return for future visits.

What Is Sborrheic keratoses?
Seborrheic keratoses are common, non-cancerous skin growths that tend to occur as people age. They can be brown or black and have a warty appearance. They are typically found on the chest, scalp, shoulders, back, abdomen, and face.
What Causes Seborrheic Keratoses?
It is not entirely clear what causes seborrheic keratoses. However, normal skin aging and too much sun exposure do play a role. Seborrheic keratoses also tend to run in families, so genes may be a cause. They are not contagious, so you cannot get them from others or spread them to someone else.
Treatment Options for Seborrheic Keratosis?
In almost all cases, seborrheic keratosis doesn’t need treatment. However, many people opt to have them removed because they find them irritating or dislike the way they look. An exam by a dermatologist is frequently all that is needed.
The treatment options for seborrheic keratosis include:
- Minor surgery to remove the growth (curettement)
- Shave biopsy
- Chemical peel
- Laser surgery
Before any procedure, you will have a consultation with our expert cosmetic dermatologists. The physician will listen to you, perform a thorough evaluation, and provide an individualized treatment plan to address your needs and concerns.
