What is Seborrheic Keratosis and How Is It Treated?

Seborrheic keratosis is a very common noncancerous skin growth. While it is harmless and doesn’t need treatment, you may decide to have it removed.

As many as 90% of adults over 60 have one or more of them. While they are harmless and don’t need treatment, you may have them removed if they become irritated by your clothing or don’t like how they look.

Dr. Stepien is amazing. I have seen her a number of times, always having great results. She takes her time, is gentle and wants to make sure you are comfortable. The office staff are welcoming, caring, and set a comfortable environment during your time there. I just experienced a tragedy in my life , Dr Stepien and staff were kind and empathetic to me. Thank you.

Where do I start?! I spent some time calling around and looking for a new Dermatologist after a really bad experience with another Doctor. I called Jacksonville Dermatology and Cosmetic and the woman who answered the phone was so welcoming that I just knew I had found our new Dermatologist! I was able to be seen a few days later with Dr. Stepien. She and her staff took great care of me. She found Squamous Cell Carcinoma on my shoulder and performed surgery on my shoulder. Dr. Stepien was very professional and warm and welcoming. The office offers many advanced derma-logical and cosmetic options and all are cutting edge! My husband went in today and he was thrilled. We both highly recommend this practice! Thanks so much!Manny Altman

What Is Sborrheic keratoses?

Seborrheic keratoses are common, non-cancerous skin growths that tend to occur as people age. They can be brown or black and have a warty appearance. They are typically found on the chest, scalp, shoulders, back, abdomen, and face.

What Causes Seborrheic Keratoses?

It is not entirely clear what causes seborrheic keratoses. However, normal skin aging and too much sun exposure do play a role. Seborrheic keratoses also tend to run in families, so genes may be a cause. They are not contagious, so you cannot get them from others or spread them to someone else.

Treatment Options for Seborrheic Keratosis?

In almost all cases, seborrheic keratosis doesn’t need treatment. However, many people opt to have them removed because they find them irritating or dislike the way they look. An exam by a dermatologist is frequently all that is needed.

The treatment options for seborrheic keratosis include:

  • Minor surgery to remove the growth (curettement)
  • Shave biopsy
  • Chemical peel
  • Laser surgery

Before any procedure, you will have a consultation with our expert cosmetic dermatologists. The physician will listen to you, perform a thorough evaluation, and provide an individualized treatment plan to address your needs and concerns.
