Excellent visit. Very professional. Only thing that would have made it better would be sending me home with written instructions regarding the use of the prescribed chemo cream.

February 2026 update: we had scheduled our 6 month checkups with Dr. Stepien, whom we highly value! However, we were seen by Michelle Madjar, NP. When scheduling our next visits, we asked if they were with Dr. Stepien and we were told that she is no longer with this office. We asked who the doctor is now and we were told that there currently is no doctor. They will be hiring a new doctor in the summer.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for leaving us a stellar review!

What Is a Mole, Exactly?

A mole is a cluster of pigmented skin cells often appearing as a brown, black, or flesh-colored spot. Most people have between 10 and 40 moles, and many appear during childhood and adolescence. Moles can be:

  • Flat or raised
  • Smooth or rough
  • Round or irregular
  • Varying in size and color

Moles are usually benign. But when they change in appearance or start behaving differently, they could be a warning sign of skin cancer—especially melanoma, the most serious form.

The ABCDEs of Mole Monitoring

Dermatologists use the ABCDE rule to assess whether a mole may be atypical or potentially cancerous:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
  • B – Border: The edges are ragged, blurred, or irregular.
  • C – Color: There’s more than one color (brown, black, red, pink, white).
  • D – Diameter: Larger than a pencil eraser (6mm), though melanomas can be smaller.
  • E – Evolving: Changes in size, shape, color, or behavior (bleeding, itching, crusting).

If you notice even one of these warning signs, it’s time to have it evaluated by a medical dermatologist.

When Should a Mole Be Checked?

While many moles are harmless, you should get them checked by a dermatologist in Jacksonville if:

  • It’s new, and you’re over the age of 30
  • It bleeds, oozes, crusts, or scabs
  • It itches, hurts, or feels tender
  • It changes shape, color, or elevation
  • You have a personal or family history of melanoma or atypical moles
  • It looks significantly different from your other moles (the “ugly duckling” sign)

Should Every Mole Be Removed?

Not necessarily. Moles are only removed when medically necessary (suspicious, painful, or at-risk) or for cosmetic reasons. At Jacksonville Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, we offer safe, surgical mole removal options in-office when removal is appropriate.

Mole removal may be recommended if:

  • A mole is biopsied, and the results are abnormal
  • It causes physical discomfort (snagging, rubbing, irritation)
  • You’re concerned about cosmetic appearance (especially on the face or neck)
  • It’s in a high-friction area like the waistband, bra line, or underarms

Can I Prevent Moles from Becoming Cancerous?

You can’t always prevent moles, but you can reduce your risk of melanoma by protecting your skin and monitoring it closely:

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days.
  • Wear protective clothing and seek shade between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Avoid tanning beds.
  • Perform monthly skin self-exams using a mirror or partner assistance.
  • Schedule annual full-body skin checks with your dermatologist.
